Trees thrive when planted in holes twice the
width of the container they are growing in.
Students gently remove the tree and prepare it
for planting.
The tree is supported and centered while
students fill the hole around the root ball.
Robby Astrove of Trees Atlanta illustrates the vital art
of root massage.  This process is the most important
step in tree planting.  As the roots are massaged they
are separated to encourage growth in the wide hole.  
Freeing the roots to grow out helps reduce the risk of
the potted roots growing in a tight circle around the
base of the tree restricting nutrients and stability.
